Since everyone is aware of my function at school I would be slitting my throat if I were to knock technology in any way. That being said, I believe the best use of technology is to enhance what teachers already do, and that is to it to present information for their students to learn. I think that using technology, media and varied other presentation methods is the way we engage the learners. If the students need technological stimulation to learn, then I believe we should use it.
The case for student laptops could be made if the retention from keyboarding class notes is equal to taking notes with paper and pencil.
Everyone is familiar with writing a list for the market, forgetting the list and still remembering everything because the action of writing the list caused the brain to store the contents. I haven’t read anything about typing retention. That is something I would like to research.
On Podcasts- (vodcasts or what ever the name du joir is) They would be a good tool for students. If a particular lecture wasn’t clear, re-hearing it or re-watching it would be a great way to cement the concept. Ever need to watch a movie with an intriguing plot twice to get all the subtleties?
The NCTE national convention theme for this year is “Because Shift Happens: Teaching in the 21st Century”. In the promo material they suggested this site http://www.thefischbowl.blogspot.com to see Karl Fisch’s slide show “Did You Know?” Check it out! mbj
Thank you Melissa for the recommendation to The Fisch Bowl blog site. I watched the ‘Did You Know / Shift Happens’ power point and then the ‘What If’, ‘180 Days’ and ‘2020 Vision’ all excellent and thought provoking in an ‘oh wow’ kind of way. What I like better about Karl Fisch is that he is a teacher who has and is thinking about where education is going and he is looking at from an EDUCATOR’S point of view. The ‘2020 Vision’ piece is particularly thought provoking and well researched. It is not a prediction of where we are going but one suggestion of where things could go. Fisch and Arapahoe HS could be a good contact to bounce our ideas off of to see what has worked for them and what they would change if they could.
